About

Celebrate The Spirit Of The Outback With Us!

Welcome to the Outback Festival in Winton, Australia! We can’t wait to share with you the spirit of the outback and celebrate the unique culture of our region.

It has been coined quirky, strange, and even weird by some, but the locals call it the “Outback Festival.”

From small beginnings in 1972, Outback Festival was born out of years of devastating drought with the desire of the Winton local community to put the town on the map.

Since then, this iconic festival has lured people from all walks of life from both Australia and overseas with its unique blend of outback-themed events and authentic Aussie experiences to now celebrate the 28th Festival in 2023.

The iconic feature of the Festival is the Quilton Australian Dunny Derby.

This country town, home to less than 1,000 residents, literally explodes with excitement and people, increasing the local population by ten-fold during the five-day festival including rare, active, and participatory events, such as the Outback Ironman, Ironwomen and Iron Juniors and the Century Cycle.

All accommodation in Winton is fully booked out during the event, with camping available at the Showgrounds and an additional Tent City developed to increase accommodation capacity.

Our Mission is to deliver an authentic Australian outback experience that actively encourages all ages to participate in the event. The Festival is welcoming, fun, and one of the world’s quirkiest events.

Our vision is to be known as one of the world’s quirkiest festivals, famous for the Australian Dunny Derby and an icon for Outback Queensland.

We are a biennial event organised by the Outback Festival Inc.; a not-for-profit incorporated association supported by a small army of volunteers.
