Volunteer Roles

We make every effort to assign roles so that the needs of the Festival and the capabilities of the Volunteers are matched.  We try to place Volunteers according to their specified preferences, but we also want to ensure that everyone who volunteers gets something to do. Below are some brief descriptions of volunteer roles at the Outback Festival.

A more detailed outline of your role/roles will be provided once your application has been successful.

Festival Administration – VISITOR INFORMATION TEAM        

This team is based at Festival HQ and helps the festival team throughout the festival period with all types of roles, including taking event enquiries from visitors, and other general tasks.

This role would suit those with customer service experience, who have been to the festival before and have knowledge of the local area.

Event Coordinators Team   

This team works across the Festival to assist the Event Managers/Coordinators in managing all events across the five-day program.

Children’s Events Team

This team ensures all our young patrons have access to lots of fun and exciting games during the Festival at the Kids Zone. You will be required to assist coordinators with duties as directed. You will need a Blue Card to work with children in this area.

Hospitality Team      

This team helps us host all our catered events, including the Bush Poet’s Breakfasts. In this area, you may be serving food and assisting in general service.

Marshaling Team

This team helps ensure all the proper rules and regulations are followed to ensure a safe and fun environment for all our events, including the Opening Concert, Australian Dunny Derby, Grand Parade Spectacular, Western River Run, and Outback Cycle Challenge.
Roles Available: Field Attendants, Treasury, Gate Entry Attendants, Timekeepers, Drink Station Attendant, ID checkers, and Wrist Band Issuers.

MERCHANDISE sALES

Our merchandise team will be selling Outback Festival shirts, hats, and much more, as well as answering general enquiries from Festival goers. Sales will be processed via both EFTPOS and cash.

If you have great customer service, can handle a fast pace and have cash handling or EFTPOS experience – this role is for you.

Main Entrance Gate/Ticketing

Yours will be the first friendly face of the festival our visitors see as you welcome and assist patrons entering the main gate. Scanning pre-purchased tickets with a digital device and selling entry tickets are all part of this busy, fast paced role.

This role would suit someone enthusiastic, friendly and welcoming with attention to detail who is fine dealing with large groups of people. Must be comfortable using technology as ticket scanning and sales involves the use of digital device.
Includes: Opening Concert, Australian Dunny Derby Day/Concert

Outback Century Cycle Challenge

Lead car driver, sag wagon driver, recovery point attendant, turning point attendant.

This team helps ensure all the proper rules and regulations are followed to ensure a safe and fun environment for the Cycle Challenge.

Production Team     

This is the team that helps set up and pack down events across the festival program. You may need to do physical work including lifting, bending and carrying. May need to use own vehicle.

Front of house

You will see this team for all point of sales. Including raffle ticket sellers, collecting information from competitors and recording information.    

Transport Team

You will see members of this team transporting patrons throughout the Festival.

Drivers must have a licence for a light rigid vehicle as well as a Queensland Driving Authority. Courtesy buses will be used around town for pickups from Showgrounds, Tent City & Caravan Parks to Venues as well as to the Australian Dunny Derby. Also, one designated driver will be responsible for collection of entertainers from the Longreach Airport to Winton and return.
